Clashes that began in early December have since calmed down with heavy mediation and involvement of China, and US offers of financial assistance for demining and rebuilding efforts. Our local reservations and operations staff are closely monitoring the situation on the ground and coordinating to support customers currently travelling to either of these destinations.

We are ensuring that no customers are visiting areas that have recently been impacted, following the guidance of trusted governing bodies and avoiding all travel within 50 km of the Thailand-Cambodia border. The map below highlights the impacted area and the proximity to the sites of Bangkok, Siem Reap and Phnom Penh. We will continue to do our best to minimise disruptions to travel plans while also ensuring their safety.  

There has been no impact on our primary travel hubs – Bangkok, Phuket, Siem Reap, Chiang Mai, Phnom Penh and commercial flights are operating as scheduled. Although diplomatic talks are underway, Discova maintains a robust Crisis Management Plan, and in the highly unlikely event that tensions escalate we are well prepared to act swiftly to ensure the health and safety of our travellers and people.

Border situation

• Civilians remain displaced from certain areas though by some estimates over half of those previously displaced have returned home.
• Key crossing points (including Poipet‑Aranyaprathet) remain closed.

Tourism impact

• We continue to monitor and follow official governing body travel advisories, respect given guidance and continue to avoid travel to impacted areas within 50 km on both sides of the border.
• Temple visits to Preah Vihear stay suspended for now.
