Discova Guides are cultural ambassadors who bring our destinations to life through their incredible storytelling and unmatched hospitality and care for guests. We understand the sheer passion, skill, and knowledge needed to succeed in this profession and continue to provide regular learning and development opportunities that empower our guides to showcase their destinations in the most authentic way.

Our Annual Guide Training (delivered in-person across our destinations) is one of the ways we empower our guides to excel in their roles. This year's training kicked off in Cambodia where we covered the cities of Siem Reap and Phnom Penh and interacted with over 50 guides (including eight women) with an average of 10 years' work experience in the tourism industry.

The two-day training covered topics like improving communication and situational leadership skills to understanding guest types and reading and managing a group's energy. These were interspersed with breakout sessions where guides could roleplay being in a challenging situation and come up with solutions together.

James Duquette, our Customer and Guide Experience Leader who led this event, says it provided a fantastic opportunity for guides to assess and solve problems in real-time.

"My biggest takeaway was a breakthrough moment when we had been discussing sustainability and single-use plastics. Several guides disagreed about how best to answer traveller questions about rubbish disposal in Cambodia. The discussion was animated and together we landed on the best approach, and how Cambodian guides can use tough questions as an opportunity to ensure travelers are attuned to Discova's focus on respecting the places we call home," he adds.

Reaksa Kheom, our Operations Executive in Siem Reap, who attended this training session for the first time, asserts that everyone deserves access to education, no matter where they live or who they are. And this year's training helped her learn new skills and see things from a different perspective.

“Discova has always provided me with great opportunities for learning, growth, and professional development. And this guide training experience was no different. I learned many new things, especially about how we should interact with animals. I also gained valuable knowledge from the guide discussions about how to handle challenges during tours and how to make clients feel comfortable and valued,” she informs.

Reaksmey Orn, another Operations Executive, recalls many genuine moments during this training, especially the smiles on everyone's faces during activities, discussions, or while sharing experiences with one another.

"Those smiles reflected the positive energy, teamwork, and enjoyment that made this training such a meaningful experience," she says.

The training in Siem Reap concluded with a 13 km trek through Angkor Archaeological Park followed by a picnic. In Phnom Penh, the guides enjoyed an intimate riverside dinner at the end of their training.

Phoy Phen, our Guide Academy Trainer, was happy to see guides openly sharing ideas, learning from each other, and reflecting on their own experiences.

"Seeing them put what they learned in the classroom into practice during the trek showed their dedication to creating memorable experiences for our guests," he says.

Mrs. Proeung Chandara, our guide in Siem Reap, echoed this sentiment says,

"The training also helped me better understand how to conduct hiking tours in the jungle, including which types of guests are suited to these experiences, how to respect our natural environment during such excursions, and how to effectively stay connected with a tour group throughout the journey."

While we are in the process of rolling out our Annual Guide Training to other destinations, Sina Lorn, our Cambodia Country Manager says that the sessions in her country gave her team a great opportunity to review what they already know and discover what they can do better.

“I was delighted to see our guides actively engage in the activities and discussions during our annual training. Their curiosity, enthusiasm for learning, and willingness to collaborate and share their own experiences is truly inspiring. Our guides will continue to elevate the guest experience while embracing sustainable tourism practices that benefit both travellers and local communities. As I often say, great journeys begin with great guides!”
