Although this eco-conscious retreat has been hosting only community-led experiences to date, we are happy to announce that starting October 1, our accommodation options will be ready to welcome travellers and connect them with the heart of the cultures and communities that Kaura serves.  

A few of our Discova colleagues were lucky to have stayed in Kaura recently, and they echo the sentiment that for guests seeking an ultimate sense of immersion and understanding of a place and its traditions, this is where they need to be.  

According to James Duquette, Discova’s Group Customer Experience Leader, the Kaura experience begins with the journey itself. He says, “When you turn off the coastal road and you begin a winding drive up into the mountain, you really begin to appreciate how much of an escape you are embarking on. The drive through rice terraces, jungle and villages is an excellent appetiser for the experience ahead.”  

 

Currently preparing for a triathlon, James has a strict training and health regimen, and he loves the fact that the active adventures and amenities at Kaura helped him stick to his plan. He rode a bike through the surrounding hills and valleys with a never-ending stream of exceptionally gorgeous views. Albeit challenging, it was perhaps the most enjoyable bike ride he has ever experienced.  

 

“The icing on the cake for me was swimming laps in the 25-yard pool – every breath your head comes out of the water, and you see the valley below you – a truly surreal experience any swimmer will treasure. Instead of swimming back and forth, seeing the sides of a pool wall or swim lane buoys, I was treated to views of an unspoiled jungle. I set a new personal record, and I know it was the Kaura rush that did it!” he adds.  

 

Karla Wilson, our APAC Account Manager, also felt completely embraced by the warmth of Kaura from the moment she came in with her family. She recounts the thoughtful welcome ceremony by the local staff, which immediately made her feel like she stepped into something special, surrounded by peace and quiet. It was almost like the world had slowed down just for her.  

 

 “One of the absolute highlights from my trip was the cooking class. It was hosted by the women farmer’s group from the nearby village and was such a joy. You prepare six different dishes, all using fresh local and seasonal ingredients, and then get to enjoy them later at the restaurant. It’s hands-on, fun, and a beautiful way to connect with Balinese culture,” she says.  

 

She also loved staying at the brand-new pavilions where everything was spotless and so well cared for, with crisp, fresh linen and thoughtful details everywhere you look. “It’s clear that a lot of love goes into maintaining the space,” she observes.  

 Both James and Karla appreciated the genuine hospitality of the Kaura staff, all of whom hailed from nearby villages and received in-house training to work at the retreat.  

 

“One of the things I enjoyed most about my stay at Kaura was how friendly and familiar all the team became after just a couple of days. Everyone at Kaura had time for a nice chat, a bit of banter, and I loved learning about where everyone is from – it seems that everyone working at Kaura was able to practically see their home from the pool deck! It was really impressive just how big a part of the community Kaura is,” James adds.
