Education Fund

A Tribute to a Visionary Leader’s Legacy

In honor and celebration of our late friend, colleague and leader, Eileen Yee, who unexpectedly left us in her prime, Discova has set up an education fund in her name. Eileen was known for her bright pink hair, her infectious smile, her relentless positive energy, and most of all, her unwavering passion for educational travel and our local communities. As General Manager for our Education Travel Team, she continuously inspired us to do more, to do better, and to create lasting impact.

Our Mission

The Eileen Yee Education Fund will provide ongoing scholarships to support high school education for disadvantaged students. This will reduce the drop-out rate and see more students reach adulthood with a broad range of life opportunities ahead of them.

  1. Sponsor a student through three years for USD 25 per month for that period and receive frequent updates on your student’s progress, or;
  2. Donate a one-off or ongoing amount of your choice to contribute to the pool of funds that will be dedicated to these scholarships.

The Need

The UN estimates that by 2030, 84 million children and young people will be forced to stay out of school. UN Sustainable Goal (SDG) number 4 aims to counter statistic and this is the SDG to which the fund’s resources will be deployed.

Quality Education

We understand that while schooling is taken care of by the government in many countries, access to education is limited by other factors. These factors can be a family’s limited financial resources and pressure on young people to earn and contribute to the household.

Selection of Students

Students will be invited to apply by way of completing a short-format 60-day, online English course through Duolingo. The students’ commitment to completing the programme, a live assessment of their acquired skills, combined with demonstrated need through economic circumstances will form the basis of selection for awarding the scholarship.

Support

Funding will be needs based and will focus on supporting the non-tuition fee expenses associated with attending school. In Cambodia this might be books and uniform. In Vietnam or Indonesia, it might be a transport and meal allowance. In Thailand, it may be an entirely different resource that would allow a displaced Burmese student to attend school.
