How Discova Puts Safety at the Heart of Every Journey

September 4, 2025

The rainy season at our Asian destinations is a sight to behold. Frequent but often brief spells of showers lead to cooler temperatures, verdant landscapes looking even more vibrant, and the sight of a rainbow (or two) stretching across clear skies. Since there are fewer tourists during this time, travellers also get easier access to popular attractions and truly immerse themselves in their unique setting.

However, the beautiful monsoon is not without its challenges. Especially when it comes to cruising the turquoise seas and bays, poorly maintained boats/ferries can be detrimental to the safety of passengers, especially during turbulent weather conditions. With capsizing incidents making headlines every year, at Discova, we continue to put the health and safety of our customers and team members as our top priorities.

As Peter Christiansen, our Director of Operations, says, “Boat tours offer a unique way to explore and connect with nature, but they also come with their own set of risks. Hence, we are committed to implementing the highest standards of safety protocols. From ensuring regular maintenance checks are carried out on the vessels to comprehensive safety briefings for our passengers, we leave no stone unturned in our quest to provide a secure environment.”

Discova works closely with our suppliers to educate them on the latest safety guidelines and our rigorous health and safety demands for our customers. Our in-house team of safety experts organises regular safety checks to ensure that every new and old supplier is ready to support our operations as safely as possible.

Operational Risk Officer Andrew Howells adds, “It’s important that operators used for marine services meet a number of key requirements around maintenance, safety equipment and emergency plans. We work closely with our preferred suppliers to understand their operations, local regulations and how, in partnership, we can meet the needs of our agents.”

Andrew further informs that we undertake checks on suppliers in several ways, including self-assessments and on-site safety inspections. By speaking directly with our suppliers, we can work towards suitable standards and address any possible issues before they impact operations.

Whether it is at a five-star resort, a community homestay or a speedboat organising full-day tours of Thailand’s picturesque Phang Nga Bay, ensuring safety is not just a policy for us; it’s a culture.
